Inlays and onlays are frequently used to restore teeth that are severely damaged by
decay or wear. They are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.
Inlays and onlays are “preformed”.
An inlay fits within the contours of the tooth. An onlay not only fits within these contours,
but it also covers the chewing surface (cusp tips) of the teeth and both are made (cast) from a mold.
First, the tooth is prepared by removing damaged tooth structure. The remaining tooth structure is shaped to receive the inlay or onlay. Then an impression of the tooth, the opposing teeth and bite is made. A special plaster model is prepared and, from that model, the inlay or onlay is custom made. The inlay or onlay is then checked for fit and eventually is cemented into the tooth. The finishing, adjusting of the bite and the final polish follow.
Since inlays and onlays are often subjected to heavy chewing pressures, a durable material is chosen. A mixture of metals, called an alloy, may be used. Alloys may contain precious metals, like gold and palladium, or non-precious metals such as nickel or chromium. Ceramic chosen to match the color or adjacent teeth may also be used.
